2nd Grade Curriculum

Reading – Second grade students will be using the Wonders 2020 language arts curriculum. There are six units of study in this curriculum, each focusing on genre studies. Each lesson will feature an anchor text and specific skills. Students will learn phonemic awareness, decoding skills, comprehension skills, grammar, and vocabulary skills. Students will participate in small group reading instruction where they will read appropriate texts based on their current reading level. Students will also be assigned spelling lists. Specific skills will be highlighted on the weekly newsletter.

Math – Students will be using the enVision Math 2.0 Common Core program published by Pearson. This is a pilot year of the program and it is aligned to the Common Core standards. The program is organized into the following Topics:

  • 14 Graphs and Data
  • 15 Shapes and Their Attributes

Writing – Students will write informational, narrative, and persuasive pieces throughout the year. Students will be expected to respond appropriately to a prompt and will be evaluated using a writing rubric. Students will need to use correct capitalization, punctuation, and spelling in their writing. They will also need to write complete sentences to develop and organize writing pieces. We will be teaching students to write using the writing process.

Science – Students will study physical, life, and earth sciences. Topics include plants, animals, matter, weather, and space.

Social Studies – Students will study communities, jobs, branches of government, holidays, customs, countries and continents. They will learn map skills.

*Science and Social Studies units will alternate.
